Discover Sushi Gama

Walking into Sushi Gama feels like stepping into a quiet pocket of Tokyo tucked along Second Avenue at 1403 2nd Ave, New York, NY 10021, United States. The room isn’t flashy, and that’s the point. Clean lines, warm wood tones, and a sushi counter that invites conversation set the tone for a place that clearly takes its craft seriously. I first stopped by on a weeknight after work, expecting a quick dinner, and ended up staying far longer than planned just watching the chefs work with calm precision.

What stands out immediately is how the menu is built around freshness rather than excess. Instead of overwhelming diners with pages of options, the focus stays on well-executed sushi, sashimi, and classic Japanese dishes. I’ve eaten sushi across New York for years, and one thing you quickly learn is that quality shows up in the rice. Here, the rice is slightly warm, gently seasoned, and consistent bite after bite. According to research from the Japanese Culinary Academy, proper rice temperature and vinegar balance are critical to flavor perception, and Sushi Gama clearly follows that principle.

During one visit, I watched the chef prepare an omakase set for a couple at the counter. Each piece was brushed lightly with soy or citrus before serving, eliminating the need for heavy dipping. That approach aligns with techniques taught by organizations like the All Japan Sushi Association, which emphasizes balance over overpowering flavors. The tuna was buttery, the yellowtail clean and bright, and the salmon cut thick without feeling heavy. It’s the kind of detail that experienced sushi lovers notice right away.

Beyond sushi, the kitchen shows equal care with cooked items. The grilled fish specials change often, depending on what’s available at the market. On one occasion, the miso-marinated black cod arrived perfectly flaky, with a caramelized edge that took days of preparation to achieve. Fermentation, marination, and controlled grilling are processes that require patience, and you can taste that effort in every bite. Studies from the National Fisheries Institute highlight how proper sourcing and handling directly affect texture and safety, and Sushi Gama appears committed to both.

The location itself plays a big role in the experience. Being on the Upper East Side means the crowd is a mix of neighborhood regulars, families, and diners who clearly know their sushi. Reviews often mention consistency, which is no small achievement in a city where restaurants come and go quickly. I’ve noticed the same staff members on multiple visits, and that stability tends to translate into better service and stronger kitchen standards.

Service here is relaxed and friendly without crossing into overbearing territory. Servers are happy to explain menu items or suggest pairings, whether it’s a dry sake or a crisp Japanese beer. When I asked about sourcing, the staff openly shared where certain fish came from and why substitutions sometimes happen. That kind of transparency builds trust, especially considering FDA guidelines require strict temperature control and handling for raw seafood.

Of course, no restaurant is perfect. Seating can feel tight during peak hours, and walk-ins may face a short wait, especially on weekends. Still, that’s often a sign of a place doing something right. The kitchen doesn’t rush, and dishes come out when they’re ready, not when the clock demands it.

For anyone browsing menus online or scanning reviews for a dependable sushi spot, this diner offers a grounded, honest experience. It’s not about trends or Instagram moments; it’s about solid technique, respectful ingredients, and a calm atmosphere that lets the food speak for itself. The fact that locals keep coming back says more than any star rating ever could.

  • I always order their takeout. Everything delicious, with a side of spicy mayo and eel sauce. And our server xin is the best! He was a very polite and efficient guy, service was top notch even though they were quite busy. I will highly recommend this place.

  • ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 — An Absolutely Phenomenal Experience at Sushi Gamma I had an absolutely fabulous dinner at Sushi Gamma with Pim, Alvin, and Evan, and I can confidently say everything about this place is grade-A all the way through. The sushi was exceptional — incredibly fresh, beautifully prepared, and full of clean, balanced flavor. Every piece felt deliberate, like the chef cared about both the quality and the craft. Easily some of the best sushi I’ve had in NYC. The service was equally impressive. Friendly, attentive, and genuinely warm, without ever feeling rushed or intrusive. You can tell the staff takes pride in what they do, and it really elevates the whole experience. And of course — Pim was amazing. Having someone who knows great food and great vibes only made the night better, and Sushi Gamma delivered on all fronts. From start to finish, the dinner was flawless. If you’re looking for top-tier sushi with equally top-tier service, Sushi Gamma is a must. I’ll definitely be back.

  • Amazing local gem with the sweetest staff. The wonton soup had the perfect broth, the crispy rice was super flavorful, and the Yakimeshi was unreal. Our waitress, Kim, was the sweetest!! So happy we found this spot. Can't wait to go back!

  • One of the best sushi spots in the city! The spicy crunch mango salmon tartar is the best tartar I’ve ever had! The mango roll, titanic roll and the spicy crunchy yellowtail roll are also phenomenal! I’ve also had the red dragon roll and the wagyu fried rice, both excellent. Haven’t had anything I didn’t like here.

  • A very good spot for sushi, with affordable prices and nice staffs. This place has been my favorite sushi spot in UES. If you walk by, you might think this is very boring/old place. However, if you taste its sushi! you will change your mind. They carry very fresh quality of sushi and other rolls. Also, offers lunch menu which has enough portions. Staffs are always nice, and I see regular customers all the time here! kids-friendly of course. Outdoor seats are possible when it's nice outside!
